» General Information:
Located in San Julio ranch in Rio Grande, Tierra del Fuego, this lodge offers a fishing package which includes everything for your comfort. Fishing guides, fishing licenses, accommodation, meals, appetizers, refreshments, and wines.
With a capacity to accommodate up to six rods, the house is located in the center of the ranch, surrounded by rocky mountains that show the passing of time and the erosion of the winds through their shapes. The architecture is based on the typical Patagonian style, built in the middle of last century.
During the building process of the lodge, one of the houses of the ranch was chosen and the façade of the building was kept. The rest was recycled in order to turn it into a fishing lodge and be able to meet the requirements and demands of a high-standard service, which is characteristic of the company. The house offers three double rooms, en suite. In the lounge, the warmth of its floors made of original lenga (Patagonian wood) and the fireplace are the ideal atmosphere to enjoy the cocktails and appetizers served after a hard fishing day.
The staff working in the lodge consists of the managers (hostess and head guide), a chef and his helper, two professional fishing guides, and housekeepers. All of them, from their own job, will guarantee unforgettable vacations, putting all their knowledge and experience at your disposal, to meet your expectations and even surpass them.
» Package:
Toon Ken opened its doors in December of 1997 and has been open ever since, during the fishing season. It is opened by Nervouswaters and it is the third Lodge in the area covered by Rio Grande. Toon Ken serves the middle region of Rio Grande, covering 17 km with access to both banks of the river. The record was a 30-pound magnificent sea run brown. In a day of fishing this river it is normal to take 3 fish per angler, with an average weight of 11 pounds.
You also have the chance of fishing resident trout in Herminita river, which is another good option. The Herminita is a typical river of the plains which meanders and is excellent for light tackle.
» Tackle and Equipment:
Depending on the river conditions you must use different flies and lines. Fast sinking ones are used at the beginning of the season. As the season goes by, the level of water decreases, so lighter lines are more suitable on those conditions. Trust your skill and bring a floating line, you won't regret it! Rio Grande has been traditionally fished with sinking lines, but the evolution of materials and the design and building of the new lines allow us to use a wide range of equipment to get better results.
Rods: between # 7 and 9, 9' long minimum:
Reels: Any reel with a strong brake system, with at least 100 yards of backing.
Lines: Weight Forward Floating, Sinkingtips and fast sinking shootings, Type Teeny T-200 or T-300.
Leaders: 9 feet for floating and 1.4-metre for sinking. 15-pound Tippets 2x.
Waders: 3.5-mm Neoprene or breathables.
Boots: wading boots with felt sole.
Flies: The same to fish Atlantic Salmon and Brown Trout (available at the lodge).
