DESTINATION: The Lodge at the Nuyakuk river
, Alaska
» General Information:
The Lodge is one of Alaska's oldest, and renowned fishing lodges. It offers exceptional fishing for trophy rainbow trout, all five species of Pacific salmon, Pike, Grayling, and Char. It is located on the banks of the Nuyakuk River in the middle of the Wood River-Tikchik State Park in Alaska. As a "grandfathered" operation in the state park, the Lodge offers uncrowded fishing on some of Alaska's premier waters and, on two drainages, is one of only two lodges that can fish a particular stretch of river. The Wood River-Tikchik region of Alaska is renowned for its salmon runs as well as its robust populations of Rainbow trout, Char, Grayling, and Pike. Truly, it is the type of fishery where anglers of all skills will catch plenty of fish and will have the opportunity to catch trophy rainbow trout as well as all five species of Pacific Salmon on both fly-tackle and conventional tackle.
» Package:
The Lodge has the distinct advantage of being a small operation located right on the river. Every evening the staff sit down with the guests and go over our plans for the next day. With nearly 20 boats scattered throughout the region, and many rivers where you do not need a boat, you will have an amazing number of fisheries to choose from everyday. All the guides need to know is what species you would like to focus on for the day, and if there is a particular river that you would like to fish, and they will help pick the best fishery for you. Each day begins with a hearty breakfast an hour after your breakfast you will depart for the days fishing. The guides will pack a picnic lunch. The daily fishing schedule departure times are flexible to maximize your fishing success. Pickup time will vary depending on the groups desired plans for the day. You can always fish in front of the lodge. Dinner time will be between 7 and 8 pm and all the anglers will return to the lodge one hour prior to dinner, so you'll have time to shower, relax and enjoy hors d'oeuvres. On the Sunday exchange days, you will usually get some fishing time in (usually unguided).
» Accommodation:
Up to 12 anglers. Four finely furnished guest cottages each with living rooms, one and two bedrooms, and private baths. There are also two well appointed bedrooms in the main lodge. Each cabin or room has modern bath facilities, independent heat, excellent beds, and all the creature comforts of home, along with spectacular views of the river, the rapids, and the snowcapped peaks.
The Lodge prides itself on the quality and abundance of the food that is available to its guests. Freshly baked bread, rolls, and pastries are served at each lodge meal. Fresh fruit and vegetables are always available. Dinner menus vary but typically include New York steak, turkey, prime rib, Halibut, a variety of Alaskan seafood, and similar items. Lunches are prepared by the lodge kitchen staff and are often times supplemented by fresh fish cooked on the stream bank. Homemade soups, breads, pastries, and desserts are the specialties of the house. Snacks are always available and we serve appetizers each evening. You won't find better food at any fishing lodge in Alaska.
» Tackle and Equipment:
Fishing equipment and clothing vary greatly from week to week. As the airlines get more stringent with luggage requirements, you might consider renting your fishing equipment. The Lodge rent fly rods and waders for the week, it is $75 to rent both a trout rod and salmon rod for the week, and $125 for waders for the week. You will need to notify us before your final invoice, if you would like to rent rods for your week. You will use a 4-6 weight fly rod for the non salmon species. The lodge also has backup fly rods available for guest use, if you happen to break a rod while you are at the lodge. We have a separate packing list for your trip that we will send out with our final invoice.
At the Lodge the salmon are always available (except for the first weeks, and last week of the season). A 7- 9 weight rod is the ideal. We suggest a 10 weight for the Kings. We suggest floating lines, but occasionally sinking lines, and sink tips can be effective, especially for the Kings.
Flies are included in the package. Spinning gear is not included, if you are a spin fisherman please notify us and we can tell you what is available at the lodge. There is a Fly tying table available for your personal use at the Lodge.

August 2010
The salmon fishing should improve because the water levels are high and fishing is currently reported as poor to fair. Very good rainbow and dolly varden fishing.
