» General Information:
The Amazon Basin is the world's largest freshwater river system. It contains 10 percent of the world's fresh water and without question 20% of the world's toughest freshwater gamefish. The Amazon River starts high in the Andes mountains and flows to join the Negro River near Manaus to create the mingling of the waters. These two great systems combine to become a river that is 200 miles across in places and that runs all the way to the Atlantic Ocean to the city of Belem. It is the greatest riverine and rainforest ecosystems anywhere on the planet. Brazil is the largest country in South America, and it contains most of the Amazon Rainforest. Manaus is the capital of the state of Amazonas and is the hub for peacock bass fishermen traveling to the Amazon. It is a city built upon the wealth of the forest.
The river we fish, small clear water tributary of the Amazon perfectly suited for peacock bass , runs through the reserve is crystal clear with a white sand bottom. It is not uncommon to find beaches filled with the tracks of the endangered Amazon River turtles, tapir and even jaguar. Nothing could be more spectacular for an angler than the return ride to the lodge after a great day of fishing through meandering bends of this great watershed as the forest comes to life each evening.. It is one of the few regions anywhere in the Amazon under permanent protection by IBAMA, the Brazilian Environmental Institute for the Protection of the Amazon and the governor of the state of Roraima. This is one of the few drainages in the Amazon where commercial fishing is absolutely prohibited, and single barbless hooks are required.
The Agua Boa River is a small clear water river flowing over white sand. The river begins high in the Mocidade mountains to its confluence with the Branco river. The river is absolutely spectacular. It is flanked by a combination of upland forest, flood forest and savannah with all of its wildlife still intact. This combination of pristine and varied habitats makes for both interesting and scenic fishing. It is common to see tapir, monkeys, manatee, river otters, parrots, toucans, macaws, anteater, sloths, peccary, agouti&etc.
» Package:
The rivers and tributaries around the Lodge are rich and diverse. Possible species include the three species of peacocks: the Butterfly (up to 10 pounds), the Paca or Spotted (up to 20 pounds), and the Temensis (up to 24 pounds although it is almost certain that a world-record fish is present in the system. The current record stands at 27 pounds). Peacock Bass are perhaps one of the toughest gamefish around. Their topwater strike is often so ferocious that the entire fish will fly several feet of the water with the fly. A large peacock is unstoppable on its first few runs. Everyone that fishes in the Lodge will return with stories of stripped reels, destroyed tackle and memories of giants that couldn't be stopped.
Anglers will fish two to a boat with one guide. The guides have been trained extensively and have many years of experience guiding for peacock bass. They are not bilingual but are somewhat conversant in fishing English and will understand your needs. After breakfast, you are welcome to fish until 6 pm. We guarantee clients an 10 hour day of fishing should they so desire. Most clients are happy to be on the water at 8 am and off by 6 pm. Unlike other outfitters, we have a flexible fishing program.
Our typical package includes 1 overnight in Manaus, transfer in/out fishing location/Manaus, 7- night accommodation in the Lodge and 6 fishing days, or fishing in a new location River "X" in a mobil tent camp with A/C to minimize the boat transfer with 6-night accommodation and 6 fishing days with guide and boat.
» Accommodation:
The Lodge is located on a quiet stretch of the Agua Boa river. At the lodge, clients are attended by a friendly Brazilian staff. The Lodge is small to afford anglers a great expanse of fishing water and to insure that the atmosphere at the Lodge is a pleasant one with a family atmosphere and sheer elegance. The Lodge was built in 2001 with a large dining room, a living room, bar and game room. The game room has a snooker table, ping pong table, darts and an endless array of games from chess to backgammon. There is also an entertainment area with a DVD player, and satellite TV. The lodge also has a great porch with an eating area, hammocks and sitting area. Outside there is a 20 meter swimming pool and bar area and a volleyball and soccer field. The Lodge has the finest facility in the peacock bass world. Combine the accommodations with the small capacity at the lodge and you will not find a better buy in the Amazon.
» Tackle and Equipment:
The rods should be 8-1/2 to 9 feet long. While a 9-weight rod is suitable for smaller peacocks, we recommend a 10- or 11-weight because of the size of the flies necessary to tempt these fish. Considering the remoteness of the fishing locations, you´ll want to bring several back-up rods in case of breakage.
Any quality saltwater reel should suffice, as long as it has a smooth drag and matches the appropriate line weight for the rod, along with an additional 200 yards of 20-pound backing. Keep a backup reel just in case.
A Weight Forward Foating line (tropic core); an Intermediate sink tip for subsurface presentations and (for those rare situations where you find deepwater oriented fish) possibly a full sinking fly line.
Peacocks are not leader shy, so build your leaders to hold the fish. You can use big-game saltwater rigs, similar to those used for tarpon. Basic construction should include a heavy butt section, loop ended for joining the leader. The leader itself should be tied with Bimini twists. A short, heavy shock tippet, of 30-40 pound monofilament tied to the fly will provide protection from the peacock´s abrasive teeth, as well as rocks, bruch and other heavy cover. In recent years, experienced fly anglers have switched to 30-40 pound fluorocarbon leader. It offers a thinner diameter than monofilament, and is typically more abrasion resistant and invisible underwater.
Flies: Peacocks are generally not finicky or discriminating, but like most gamefish they will sometimes gravitate towards certain sizes and colors while ignoring other offerings. So come well-stocked with both topwater and subsurface flies in various shapes, sizes and colors.
The most successful flies are larger profiled patterns - all tied on 3-0 and 4-0 quality saltwater hooks, High-Tie or variations of Lefty's Deceivers. When fishing subsurface fly patterns, the materials should contain a reflective material, such as Krystal Flash or Flashabou, as they give a more life-like appearance to these baitfish patterns. Attach the fly to the shock tippet with the use of any loop knot, such as the Perfection loop knot.
» Additional Information:
The Agua Boa has the finest fishing anywhere in the Amazon for peacocks from 6-18 pounds. You are able to catch fish up to 23 pounds, but would caution that if you are strictly after a world record that you consider a blackwater, and not a clearwater river. Blackwater Rivers produce the largest peacocks, but are very poor fishing. Simply put they do not have a high density of fish, birds or wildlife. In our estimation the blackwater fisheries of the Amazon are overrated and oversold. You will see what we mean on the return flight from your country. We prefer to focus on quality fishing, great accommodations, and a pristine jungle experience rather than having a client catch one twenty pound fish and few other fish in a week.
If you are after quality or quantity fishing, the Agua Boa is your best option anywhere in the Amazon. A fairly normal day would be 15-30 peacock bass per rod. If you want to catch 75 fish a day, that is always possible. Please just let us know your interest. There are inland lakes where you literally can catch fish until you are tired.
