DESTINATION: Far End Rivers Lodge
, Tierra del Fuego
» General Information:
The archipelago consists of a main Tierra del Fuego or Isla Grande with an area of 48,100 km², and a group of smaller islands. Half of this island, and the islands west and south of it, are part of the Magallanes Region of Chile. The eastern part of the archipelago belongs to Argentina part of the Tierra del Fuego Province; its capital is Ushuaia, the biggest city of the archipelago.
The climate is very inhospitable in this region and is a subpolar oceanic climate with short, cool summers and long, wet, moderate winters.
Like mainland Chile and Argentina to the North, the archipelago boasts some of the finest trout fishing in the world. Sea Run BrownTrout often exceed 20 lbs, particularly in rivers such as the Rio Grande, San Pablo, Lago Fagnano and others. Much of this water is private, catch and release and fly fishing only.
Far End Lodge is located in the Maria Luisa Estancia and within 3 or 3 and 1/2 hours drive from Ushuaia or Rio Grande Airport. The Irigoyen & Malengüena rivers plus their tributaries conform a privileged basin. A unique geography and landscape: the austral Atlantic Ocean, the very last tip of the Andes Mountains, and their dense forests of lengas and ñires, all entwined in a permanent natural clash. The fishery is located 180km to the south from Río Grande town, in the Tierra del Fuego province. The Irigoyen and the Malengüena, holds a healthy population of sea run brown trout, and also, although in less extent, resident brownies.
One of the most singular qualities that stand out of the Irigoyen´s river basin is the geographic and biological diversity: the mountains behold a delightful environment, with their forests of lengas and ñires, and the clear river flowing throughout the valleys.
Both rivers holds abundant populations of sea run brown trout, an exclusive fishery in private waters where fly anglers will be able to enjoy one hand light rods, among a unique landscape, without suffering whips permanent of strong austral winds, (except in pools near the mouth, and in the sea itself), battling with enormous, wild, and fresh fish.
2008 will be the first season, operating the fishery with expert guides, 6 wheels brand new special vehicles to reach the furthest spots, rebuild cabins, excellent Argentinean kitchen, only 4 anglers per week (7 nights, 6 days fishing), and of course special rates. The Irigoyen & Malengüena rivers are the best kept secret in Tierra del Fuego.
